Selected from all the entries in all categories, Bracken’s image won the cover because of “the simplicity of the image,” says Monday’s McLaughlin. “It’s also a unique perspective— how the hand lines up with the eye is very engaging. A lot of the photos we saw had a lot going on in them, but this one works well because it’s such a simple concept, and so well-realized.” McLaughlin also notes that this is the first black-and-white cover we’ve had in eight years of photo contests. “It probably wouldn’t be as dynamic in colour,” he says, adding that the lack of colour gives it a very intimate feeling—“like you’re having a moment with her.
